Sinus augmentation is performed before dental implants are inserted on the upper back jaw. This area usually lacks bone density and is close to the sinus cavity which makes dental implants difficult to insert without adjustments. A sinus augmentation raises the maxillary sinus to then insert bone graft material. Once the area heals, the dental implant can be inserted. The healing process usually takes a few months depending on how much bone is needed. However, there are situations when bone graft material is not needed. If this is so, the dental implant may be inserted the same day cutting recovery time in half.
Is this procedure painful?
The area is numbed beforehand. You may experience swelling and mild pain afterwards. Use cold packs and over-the-counter medicine. Although rare, contact us if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Persistent swelling or pain
- Excessive bleeding
- Or if the bone graft material has moved
